Overtime and PTO payout calculator
Estimate a week's overtime pay or the value of unused vacation. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us.
Assumptions
- Federal rule (FLSA): covered non-exempt employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Each workweek stands alone. U.S. Department of Labor
- California option: 1.5 times for hours over 8 in a day and over 40 in a week, and for the first 8 hours on the seventh consecutive workday; 2 times for hours over 12 in a day and over 8 on the seventh consecutive workday. "Seventh day" here means all 7 days of the week have hours. Weekly overtime counts only hours not already paid as daily overtime. California Labor Commissioner
- The "regular rate" can include some bonuses and other pay; this tool uses only the hourly rate you enter. It assumes the employee is non-exempt and the days entered are one workweek. Other states may have their own rules: see overtime by state.
This shows the value of the hours at the rate you enter, before taxes. Whether unused vacation must be paid out depends on the state and the employer's policy; for example, California treats accrued vacation as wages at termination, while Texas requires payout only if a written policy or agreement promises it.
