Workplace harassment
Harassment based on a protected characteristic, such as race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information, can be unlawful when it is severe or pervasive or leads to a job action. Federal law also protects people who report it from retaliation.
Is all bullying illegal?
Not under federal anti-discrimination law, unless it is tied to a protected characteristic. Some employers prohibit all bullying in their policies, and some places have additional rules.
How do I report harassment?
Follow your employer's complaint procedure if there is one and keep a copy of what you send. You can also contact the EEOC or your state agency.
Is there a deadline to file with the EEOC?
Yes, and it can be short. See the EEOC's time limits page.
