COBRA health coverage after a job ends

COBRA generally lets workers and their families keep group health coverage for a limited time after events such as job loss or reduced hours. It usually applies to plans of employers with 20 or more employees, and you may have to pay the full premium plus a small administrative fee (up to 102% of the cost).

How do I sign up?

The plan must send an election notice. Follow the instructions and deadlines in that notice.

Does my small employer offer COBRA?

Federal COBRA generally covers employers with 20 or more employees. Some states have their own continuation laws for smaller employers.
