Unemployment benefits

Unemployment insurance is a joint federal-state program. Each state runs its own program and sets its own eligibility rules, but you usually need to be out of work through no fault of your own and meet your state's work and wage requirements.

Where do I apply?

Generally with the unemployment program in the state where you worked, online, by phone or in person depending on the state.

Can I get benefits if I was fired?

It depends on the reason and your state's rules. The state decides based on the facts and its rules, so it's often worth applying.

How soon should I apply?

As soon as possible after you become unemployed. The Department of Labor says the first payment generally takes two to three weeks after filing.
